What is a CEREC?

Computer-assisted ceramic restorations

CEREC is a technology that allows us to create ceramic crowns and inlays directly in the clinic in a single visit. After preparing your damaged tooth, we take a digital impression using a 3D camera. The computer then designs a custom restoration perfectly fitted to your mouth.

This high-quality ceramic restoration protects and strengthens cracked, damaged, weak, or worn teeth while restoring full function. We polish and shape it to match your natural teeth perfectly. Instead of waiting several weeks with a temporary crown, you leave the same day with your permanent restoration.

Aftercare instructions

A high-quality, natural-looking restoration

First 24 hours

  • Avoid eating while the numbness lasts (2 to 4 hours after the procedure) to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
  • Post-operative sensitivity in the tooth or gum is normal. To reduce discomfort, temporarily avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks. If the sensitivity continues, contact us so we can check if an occlusion adjustment is needed.

Hygiene and maintenance

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily, especially around the restoration, to prevent plaque buildup at the crown–gum junction.
  • Avoid harmful habits: Do not bite hard objects (pens, nails, ice), avoid using your teeth as tools (e.g., to open packages), and refrain from clenching or grinding your teeth. If you suffer from bruxism, a nightguard is recommended to protect your restoration.
  • Visit your dentist for check-ups according to your personalized hygiene protocol.

Signs to watch for

Contact us if you notice a crack or fracture, if your restoration feels loose or comes unbonded, or if you experience persistent or increased sensitivity, pain when chewing, or any other unusual changes.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about CEREC technology

How long does a CEREC restoration last?

Studies show that CEREC restorations have a success rate of over 95% after 10 years and can last 15 to 20 years or more with good oral hygiene. You can chew, smile, and live normally with confidence!

Are CEREC restorations as strong as natural teeth?

They are comparable. Specifically, ceramic inlays restore up to 96% of the strength of a natural tooth. CEREC restorations resist wear, chewing forces, and staining, and they do not cause any allergic reactions. Your CEREC restoration is designed to last, so care for it just like your natural teeth.

Is CEREC suitable for all situations?

CEREC is suitable for the vast majority of cases requiring a crown or inlay, including cavities, fractures, large fillings, root canal treatments, or crowns on implants. Some situations may require a traditional approach, such as multi-tooth bridges or highly complex aesthetic cases on front teeth. We assess your situation during the consultation to recommend the best solution for you.
