What are neuromodulators?

Therapeutic and Aesthetic Applications of Botox®

Neuromodulators are products based on botulinum toxin type A. This highly purified neurotoxin is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When diluted in a saline solution for safe medical use, it is injected into the muscles to block the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction.

Our dentists use three brands of neuromodulators (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®) depending on your needs. Therapeutic injections help relax overactive chewing muscles to reduce pain. Dentists can also perform injections for cosmetic purposes, such as treating a gummy smile. By relaxing the upper lip muscle, these injections reduce excessive gum exposure when smiling.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Frequently asked questions about Botox®

Are Botox® injections painful?

No, Botox® injections and other neuromodulators like Dysport® and Xeomin® are generally well tolerated and cause minimal discomfort.

Most patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch or light pressure that lasts only a few seconds at each injection site.

Can Botox® alter my appearance or cause facial paralysis?

No. When administered correctly by a certified dentist for therapeutic purposes, neuromodulators (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®) do not change your appearance or paralyze your face.

Therapeutic injections for TMJ disorders or bruxism specifically target the muscles used for chewing. These muscles do not affect your facial expressions. However, cosmetic injections can reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face and neck.

How long do the effects of Botox® last?

Results are not immediate. You may start to notice a reduction in muscle tension within 3 to 5 days, with the full effect visible after about 14 days.

The effects typically last 3 to 6 months. Follow-up injections can be scheduled approximately every 3 to 4 months before the effects completely wear off.
