What are dental crowns and fixed bridges

A restoration designed to last

Dental crowns

A dental crown is a hollow artificial tooth made of ceramic or sometimes precious metal (gold). It is custom-designed from your dental impressions to mimic the shape, color, and texture of your natural teeth. This prosthetic restoration completely covers a damaged tooth to protect it, restore its shape, and regain its function.

Fixed bridges

A fixed bridge is a permanent solution to replace one or more missing teeth. This prosthesis consists of one or more artificial teeth connected to crowns placed on the neighboring teeth. It fills the space left by missing teeth while relying on the adjacent teeth for stability and function.

Living with a crown and a fixed bridge

After the placement of a crown or bridge

Sensitivity to hot or cold may persist for a few weeks. If it worsens or becomes painful, please consult us.

Long-term maintenance

Care for your dental crown or bridge just like your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss daily using a floss threader under bridges, and visit your dentist for regular check-ups.

Extend the life of your restorations

With proper care, your restoration can last 10 to 15 years or more. To help extend the life of your restorations, avoid biting hard objects (pens, nails, ice) and chewing very hard foods on one side only. We also recommend wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions on dental crowns and fixed bridges

How long does a crown or bridge last?

A well-maintained dental crown or bridge can last 10 to 15 years, and in some cases even longer. Its longevity depends on several factors, including the quality of oral hygiene, eating habits, teeth grinding (bruxism), and bite strength.

Can a crown or bridge get a cavity?

The dental crown or bridge itself cannot develop cavities because they are made of artificial materials. However, the natural tooth beneath the crown or the teeth supporting the bridge can develop cavities, especially at the junction between the crown and the gum. This is why maintaining good oral hygiene habits is so important.

What are the alternatives to fixed bridges for replacing missing teeth?

The main alternatives are dental implants and removable partial dentures. During your consultation, our dentists will recommend the best options based on your situation (health of adjacent teeth, bone volume, budget).
